Thunderbirds was first screened on television in 1965, although most of us old enough to remember when it was initially broadcast would probably have seen it in black and white, because in the 1960s colour television was simply not available here in the UK. By the time Thunderbirds was produced Supermarionation was a proven technique.

The Supermarionation technique was developed and refined during the making of successive series including Supercar, Fireball XL5 and Stingray. By using this technique the puppets’ lips were controlled and moved perfectly in sync to the soundtrack. When the puppets were being filmed the electric signal from the taped dialogue was hooked up to sensors in the puppets’ heads.
Thunderbirds was the brainchild of Gerry Anderson who had a number of jobs, including working as a portrait photographer, before turning his attention to making puppet series using the Supermarionation technique where the sound would be recorded first and then the action scenes would be filmed afterwards. “Thunderbirds are GO!” – was Jeff Tracy’s famous announcement which would herald the departure of International Rescue on another daring mission. Now his magic is having a similar effect upon our children. My childhood would not have been the same without Gerry Anderson's work - he filled my childlike mind and my childhood days in the 1960s & 1970s with wonder.
In memory of Gerry Anderson the creator of hit TV shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Joe 90, who has sadly died at the age of 83.
